14. The cooling pad and ventilation fan system

Weaner rearing farms are used to rear pigs from the end of the weaning stage, during which they remain close to the farrowing sows (weaners) until they reach the age of approximately 28 days and a weight of 6kg, for a further period of some 35 days, until they reach a weight of about 25kg.
Typically, the structure to be constructed for this purpose (or a number of buildings with similar configurations), will have a corridor adjacent to and along the entire length of the side wall. These buildings will have a width of 21.5 meters, divided up by partitions across the width into seven rooms - one each for the six weeks of rearing and another week for the preparation of the room for the receipt of the next group. Each room will hold a group of 30 to 50 weaners in pens.
The pen floor shall be plastic slats some of which shall be sealed, while others, in the lying area with a sheltering roof, shall be fitted with floor heating plates. Special attention shall be paid to ad-lib feeding and constantly available drinking water. The rearing house will also have a continuously operating climate control system, which shall be flexible enough to provide ventilation, heating and cooling required throughout the enormous gain in weight between entry into the building and marketing. Building design will ensure the rearing environment is comfortable in terms of the range of temperatures suitable for the weaners.
